The health care industry has the highest number of workplace injuries and workers’ compensation claims out of all industries in the province.
That’s according to the President of the Registered Nurses Union, who was responding to questions raised on VOCM Open Line surrounding the compensation system for nurses.
Yvette Coffey says while not exclusive to long-term care, many workplace injuries do come from that field.
She says the nature of that work is highly physical, which leads to a high incidence of injuries.
Coffey says nurses also see the highest amount of workplace violence.
She says just recently they had a RN working in the emergency department have her nose broken by a patient, and then have to care for that patient during her shift.
