Capital City Looks to Eliminate Daycare Red Tape

The City of St. John’s is taking steps to reduce restrictions and the amount of red tape to go through for people who wish to open a daycare.

Parts of the province, including metro, are experiencing a crunch in child care spaces with people on a wait list for months or years.

St. John’s is expected at a future council meeting to expand the zoning categories where home daycare businesses with capacity for seven or fewer children are legally allowed to operate.

Councillor Maggie Burton has first-hand experience with the child care shortage.

She says the city needs all types of daycare in different neighbourhoods—not just in commercial and institutional zones.
