The fisheries union is working hard to ensure that the commercial cod fishery in area 3PS on the province’s south coast stays open in light of a discouraging stock assessment.
Despite a small commercial fishery, stocks remain in the critical zone, largely due to warming water temperatures and the region’s rapidly changing ecosystem. That’s leading to fears that the limited commercial fishery may be shut down.
FFAW President Greg Pretty says the union’s own science branch, led by Dr. Erin Carruthers, is working closely with DFO and union leadership to ensure the fishery doesn’t close.
