Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly says the first group of Canadians living in the West Bank have safely crossed the border into Jordan.

The federal government has been working to get Canadian citizens out of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank since Hamas attacks on Israel sparked increased violence and hostility in the area.

Minister Joly called Gaza the worst place to be in the world right now and Canada is working to get all citizens in the area safely out of the region.

Two additional Canadian Forces flights left Tev Aviv yesterday, bringing the total number of Canadians flown out of Israel to Athens to more than 1,000.

National Defence Minister Bill Blair says the airlifts will continue “as long as required.”
