Harbour Grace Ocean Enterprises – Grand Retriever
It’s business as usual at Harbour Grace Ocean Enterprises.
The major employer recently filed for protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act as it undergoes a restructuring process.
Mayor Don Coombs has been talking with the owners and is encouraged by their commitment to the town and to their 60 employees. He says they’re currently working on 16 to 18 boats, and “the place is full.”
Coombs says the company, which had seen significant expansion in recent years, ran into trouble over the course of the pandemic. Fixed pricing on contracts meant the company was falling behind as costs soared, but Coombs says he’s optimistic a way forward can be found for the company and its workers.
