Labrador MHA Concerned with Lack of Community Representation in Policing Review

A Labrador MHA says government has missed an opportunity to help restore public confidence in policing.

The province announced a Policing Transformation Working Group yesterday, designed to evaluate the current policing model and make recommendations.

NDP MHA for Torngat Mountains, Lela Evans, says the lack of community representation a fatal flaw in the initiative. She says its alarming that women’s groups, Indigenous groups, the queer community, newcomers and mental health advocates have no voices at the table. Justice Minister John Hogan has indicated there will be community engagement during the process.

Evans says community groups continue to call for a police oversight board, but government continues to ignore those calls.
