Young farmers from across the province are meeting in St. John’s today for the 10th annual NL Young Farmers Leadership Summit.
Workshops include things like business planning and climate-friendly farming practices.
Jeremy McNiven of McNiven’s Fresh Produce in St. John’s is among those in attendance. He was drawn to farming after becoming more acutely aware of the food system during his time working at a grocery store and while studying at MUN.
He says challenges include weather and pests and diseases, but the biggest challenge faced by many young farmers is access to land.
“If you can’t get land, you can’t farm.”
